Marc Johnson’s first adidas colorway was a Tar Heels blue Matchcourt Mid, commemorating his home state and adding a nice dash of tasteful color to an otherwise fairly quiet adidas palette.
In continuing the idea of a fresh take on a repurposed classic, on round two MJ went with the always aesthetically-pleasing red, but the real shine here is the deviation from the rubber toecap. Sure, the rubber toe has been in some state of death (if comments are to be believed) since it started making its way back as an industry standard, but it’s a functional asset to any shoe that gives it some extra life.
That said, it is notably pleasing to the eye to see the Matchcourt with a suede toe. The sidewall/toecap bump toward the ollie area is ever-present and the remainder of the tooling remains the same, but getting to see what this model looks like in one of our favorite colors with a suede toe has us convinced that’s the way to go. It also never gets old to see an “MJ” on a shoe.
The red MJ Matchcourt is available for $80.
